How to Care for Cashmere

How to Care for Cashmere

A Considered Guide to Longevity

The Beauty of Cashmere

There is a quiet confidence to cashmere. Lightweight yet insulating, refined yet resilient, it is one of the most luxurious natural fibres — not because it demands attention, but because it endures.

Our cashmere begins at source, in the remote regions of Mongolia where the world’s finest fibres are produced. Sourced from the soft undercoat of cashmere goats, each fibre is exceptionally fine — giving it its signature softness, breathability, and warmth without weight.

Through long-standing partnerships with trusted mills and suppliers, we ensure consistency, integrity, and a level of craftsmanship reflected in every piece. With considered care, it softens and settles over time, becoming more personal with every wear.

Cashmere speaks to a slower way of dressing. One that values longevity over volume, intention over impulse. It aligns naturally with a buy well, buy once philosophy: investing in fewer, better pieces and caring for them properly so they can be worn season after season.”

Why Invest in High-Quality Cashmere

Premium cashmere offers more than comfort  - it offers longevity, versatility and value over time.

  • Breathable warmth that regulates temperature and layers effortlessly across seasons
  • Exceptional softness that feels gentle against the skin while remaining durable with proper care
  • Lightweight versatility for everyday wear, travel and elevated styling
  • Timeless appeal that transcends trends and supports a more enduring wardrobe

When cared for well, a cashmere knit becomes a long-term companion rather than a short-term purchase - reducing replacement, lowering cost-per-wear and supporting a more sustainable approach to consumption.

How to Wash Cashmere

Less is more when it comes to washing. Cashmere does not require frequent laundering and benefits from gentle handling.

When to wash

Wash only when necessary — after several wears or if the garment has absorbed odour. Between wears, allow your knit to air naturally to refresh the fibres.

Hand washing cashmere

  1. Fill a basin with cool water.
  2. Add a small amount of gentle wool or cashmere detergent.
  3. Submerge the garment and softly move it through the water. Avoid rubbing or wringing.
  4. Allow to soak for up to 10 – 15 minutes.
  5. Rinse thoroughly in cool water.
  6. Press out excess water using a clean towel. Never twist or wring out knitwear.

Drying

Lay flat on a towel and reshape to its original form. Allow to dry naturally away from heat or direct sunlight. Hanging wet knitwear can distort the shape.

How to Store Cashmere

Thoughtful storage preserves the integrity of your knitwear between seasons.

  • Store garments clean. Moths are drawn to natural fibres that carry body oils or fragrance
  • Fold rather than hang to maintain shape through the shoulders and neckline
  • Use breathable storage such as cotton garment bags or fabric boxes
  • Protect naturally with cedar, lavender, bay leaves or eucalyptus instead of harsh chemicals

Before packing away for warmer months, a gentle wash ensures your cashmere remains fresh and protected while in storage.

How to Maintain Cashmere Over Time

Pilling is a natural characteristic of cashmere, particularly in areas of friction. It is not a sign of poor quality, but rather a result of fine fibres interacting with movement. To minimise this:

  • Use a cashmere comb or fabric shaver to gently remove pills

(complimentary with purchase of any 100% cashmere)

  • Be mindful of friction from heavy bags or textured outer layers
  • Rotate your knitwear between wears to allow fibres to recover

“With care, cashmere evolves beautifully — becoming softer, more fluid, and more uniquely yours."

A More Considered Wardrobe

Caring for what you own is an act of intention. It encourages a wardrobe built slowly, thoughtfully, and with longevity in mind, pieces that earn their place and remain relevant well beyond a single season.

At White Story, our approach to design centres on premium fabrications, timeless silhouettes and garments that are designed to be worn often and kept for years. Cashmere is not designed for disposal. It is designed for life.

When you invest in quality and care for it properly, you create a wardrobe that is not fleeting, but enduring.
